Family Values

Take a look at what’s happening to our family life. Do we communicate? Do we share? Do we take time to get involved with each other? Are there opportunities for improvement? What is God’s plan for us?

Today’s society makes it hard to be a family. Television takes up a lot of our time together. The hustle and bustle of business, rushed meals, school, work, committee meetings, sports and shopping are cramming our days and weeks.

The family is under heavy attack today. The battle is largely over values and commitments. To survive, the family needs support. Its primary source of strength must be found in a growing religious and parish life. But it also can be helped substantially by an organization such as ours.

Our goal as Knights is to help prevent the death of the family by administering preventive medicine.

We conduct those programs and activities which aid in rebuilding the family spirit from within, making it vital and strong enough to resist society’s ills. We encourage members and their families to choose as their model the Holy Family, copying their attitude of interdependence, sharing and respect for authority.

We work to strengthen family life. We nourish wholesome home life through the sponsorship of activities involving entire families on a scheduled and continuing basis. Encourage communications and routines which involve family members within their own homes as well as bringing families together in social and recreational events in the community.

We strive to stimulate togetherness within family units. There are many ways in which families can enjoy time together in a scheduled, organized way, even when the age range of members of the family varies widely.

"A Father's Identity" offers men resources on how to build a strong, loving and confident identity in a culture that often does not value fatherhood or masculine virtues. The Web site also offers sections on male spirituality and building a better relationship with God, topics that are often overlooked on other male-oriented sites.

Knights in Action: Sturgis Family FundraiserOn May 6th, 2009, St. Dominic's Regional High School asked our council to help them do a spaghetti fundraiser for the Sturgis family whose home burnt down in April in Lewiston, Maine. Their daughter attends St. Dom's. The students and faculty wanted to do something to help. We agreed to help with a spaghetti supper. St. Dom's and members of our council had all of the items needed for the supper donated. They also had a 50/50 raffle. Students, faculty, our ladies auxiliary, our council and friends all worked hard to make this a great success. We served over 350 people. With the 50/50 $2219.00 was raised for the family. We received a thank you letter from Donald Fournier, the principal of St. Dom's with a special note "your crew is the best!".

Knights in Action: Fathers for GoodInformation pertaining to the www.fathersforgood.org website, and sample pamphlets available at the site to help fathers, were sent to the Trinity Catholic School principal and assistant principal. We felt this contained valuable information to help struggling fathers who did not know where to turn for help. Shortly thereafter the principal exchanged emails confirming how many pamphlets would be needed for distribution at both campuses. We ordered 1000 pamphlets for distribution. Our program director, Brother Michael Leveille, and his wife Julie picked up the box of pamphlets we ordered from council office. There were two different pamphlets giving vital resources for fathers who may need spiritual and practical guidance in fatherhood. Mike and Julie bundled the pamphlets for distribution to all the children of Trinity Catholic School at both the junior and elementary campuses.

A total of 700 packets were made for the 700 students. These were delivered to the Baird Street Trinity Catholic School office. The packets of pamphlets were to be given to the students to bring home at both campuses the week before Father's day.
